Dr Raji Kooner is a consultant urological surgeon based in Sydney, with a particular interest in kidney stone disease. He has been performing ureteroscopy, pyeloscopy and laser lithotripsy for more than 20 years and was an early adopter in Australia of flexible ureteroscopy with the high-powered Holmium laser.
Across his career, Dr Kooner has performed more than three thousand robotic and minimally invasive urological procedures. He continues to contribute to the training of junior urologists and to the evaluation of emerging stone-management techniques.
The emphasis at Sydney Kidney Stone Clinic is on complete stone clearance where feasible, rather than simply fragmenting a stone and hoping the pieces will pass. Where stone size and anatomy allow, Dr Kooner uses a dedicated extraction basket (Dormia basket) at the time of ureteroscopy to retrieve fragments, and applies high-powered Holmium laser settings only when they are justified by the stone burden.
For patients who form more than one stone, prevention is treated as an equally important part of the pathway. Dr Kooner works closely with renal physician colleagues for formal metabolic assessment and tailored preventive therapy.
